Six feet beneath the root mass of a fallen yellow poplar, or deep within the hollow trunk of a standing hemlock forty feet above the forest floor, the winter takes on a different dimension. Here, a female black bear occupies a space barely larger than her body. She entered this enclosure in late autumn, pulled by the changing light and the exhaustion of the acorn crop. Her state is torpor, a metabolic suspension distinct from the deep sleep of true hibernation. Her breathing has slowed to a few shallow breaths a minute, her heartbeat to long, spaced intervals. Her internal temperature decreases by only a few degrees. She is alert to the structural integrity of her shelter. If a heavy accumulation of ice snaps a limb overhead, or if the soil shifts against the trunk, her eyes open in the darkness.
She stays capable through the winter weeks. She shifts her weight periodically to prevent pressure sores on her skin, turning within the nest of shredded bark and dry leaves that she gathered before the freeze. Her muscles retain their tone without the wasting that accompanies months of stillness. She holds her hind paws tucked against her abdomen, conserving the heat generated by her massive chest. The air within the cavity stays warm, insulated by the thickness of the surrounding wood or the heavy capping of snow above the root mass.
In late January, inside the complete darkness of the den, the cubs are born. They arrive into the winter world nearly hairless and entirely blind. Each weighs about eight ounces. Their survival depends immediately on the proximity of the sow's skin. They are small enough to be cupped within a human hand, their pink skin visible through a sparse coat of fine grey fur. Guided by instinct and the sound of the mother, they crawl through her thick fur to find the nipples along her abdomen. The sow rouses to tend them, using her tongue to clean them and guiding them toward her warmth.
For the remainder of the winter, the sow draws everything inward. She keeps to the shelter without drinking water or foraging for food. Her body recycles its waste internally, converting urea into proteins that preserve her tissues. Her substantial fat reserves break down continuously to generate milk. This milk is exceptionally rich, high in fat and protein, allowing the cubs to grow rapidly while the mountain outside stays frozen. She spends the dark months listening to the rhythmic sound of their nursing, her massive limbs curled around them to seal out the penetrating cold of the slope.
The concentration of dens on these north-facing slopes relies on the steady cold of the aspect. The park carries one of the densest populations of black bears in the eastern United States, a carrying capacity enabled by the immense volume of hard mast produced in the fall and the complexity of the mountain terrain. By choosing the northern aspects of the ridges, the sows take the steadiest ground the mountain offers. These slopes receive minimal solar radiation during the winter solstice, keeping the ground consistently frozen and preventing the premature warming that could cause water to flood rock cavities or rot the interior of fallen timber. The cold holds the dens steady, matched to the bear's lowered metabolism.
This high density occupies the mountain without showing itself from any distance. The vertical pitch of the land lets individual territories overlap within the steep ravines, while thickets of rosebay rhododendron and mountain laurel blanket the ground in an evergreen cover that blocks the eye and traps the earth's heat close to the drainage bottoms. In the high-elevation ridges where oak stands give way to northern hardwoods, centuries of windstorms and lightning have left a heavy architecture rich in hollow trees and structural debris. Standing hemlocks and chestnut oaks often develop hollow centers while staying alive, offering vertical chambers; other sites sit beneath the massive root systems of wind-thrown trees, where the upturned earth forms a natural roof reinforced by falling leaves. The sheer roughness of the ground, broken by sandstone cliffs and deep crevices, creates thousands of isolated pockets across each square mile of the park.
Above these hidden chambers, the winter daylight moves across the open ridges with a stark clarity. From the spine of the Appalachian Trail or the overlooks along the high gaps, the forest appears stripped to its essential skeletal form. The ridges show themselves as parallel folds of purple-gray stone, their upper crests coated in rime frost that catches the sharp northern light. A human walking along the ridgeline sees only the vast expanse of bare branches and the brown carpets of frozen leaf litter. The streams in the deep gashes of the valleys are visible from the heights, appearing as motionless threads of silver locked between banks of dark moss.
Down along the empty access roads and the lower trails that follow the river courses, the season settles into a heavy, cold stillness. The hemlocks carry shelves of dry snow on their flat needles, and the mud of the pathways has frozen into sharp, jagged ridges that ring under the strike of a walking stick.
