Highcountry
Winter Limited
The lodge perches just above the fog line, where the afternoon air sharpens and the world beyond the windows grows indistinct. Inside, the scrape of a hatchet against oak punctuates the hush—logs split and stacked with the slow assurance of habit. Leather wingbacks, burnished and creased, are angled toward windows that catch the last pale light. On the shelves, books—spines faded by decades of touch—lean into each other. The scent is layered: resin from the hearth, a trace of tobacco leaf mellowed by cedar, and something older, like dust rising from floorboards when the fire sighs.
Nightfall brings a thirty-degree plunge; on the porch, breath blooms white for a moment before dissolving. Inside, warmth pools—someone pours bourbon, neat, the glass pressing a cool crescent into a palm. Teakwood and the ghost of musk hang in the shadows beyond the fire’s reach. The leather chairs, still warm from the sun, give back the day in slow increments. Beyond the glass, clouds gather and crawl along the Blue Ridge spine. Inside, the silence is physical—thick as a wool blanket, punctuated only by the settling of timbers. Distance here is measured not in miles but in the satisfaction of unanswered questions.
